On Saturday June 14, 2008, we were under a canopy generously supplied by Clore-English Funeral Home that kept our volunteers, dogs, and cats relatively cool. Luna was the only cat, but she was joined by 5 kittens. As for the dogs we were kept company by Slick, Buddy, Nellie and Chrissy.
Thanks to all who stopped by! The event allowed us to increase membership, spawn interest in a few of the animals we had out there, and of course raise money through sales and donations. A special thank you to Precision Tune (formerly Berry's Tire and Automotive Service Center) for inviting us!
We participated in an event held the weekend of May 3rd and 4th where animal organizations worldwide join together to find a home for each and every shelter pet. We had several cats and dogs at the PetSmart in Culpeper. During our four hour event, we had a cat, Mary, and a dog, Spunky, adopted! Interest was generated for others. Having a third of our animals at the event find “forever homes” was certainly a success!
It was a beautiful day, albeit a windy one. But our canopy, lent by Clore English Funeral Home, survived as did we. We enjoyed meeting with those who stopped by and are grateful for all those who generously donated. We sold some shirts and Culpeperopoly games and passersby were able to meet Nellie, a redbone coonhound mix, that is available for adoption. Thanks to several volunteers who helped make the day a success!
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit wiith a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.
