Pet Problems: giving up a pet The Humane Society of Culpeper does not operate an independent rescue facility at this time. Instead, we rely on loving foster families to care for adoptable animals while they await their "forever homes."

Due to our limited number of foster families, we most likely CANNOT accept any companion animals at this time.

To be considered for our foster program, the pet MUST be Spayed or Neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, negative for heartworms, currently on heartworm preventative, and healthy.  In addition to vet records, a surrender fee of at least $50 (to cover re-adoption costs) is required.

If we are not able to accept your pet into our foster program, Culpeper residents may call the Culpeper County Animal Shelter at (540) 547-4477. To sign over a pet, the owner must be a Culpeper County resident over the age of 18.

Before giving up your pet, you should be aware that the Culpeper County Animal Shelter has limited space and euthanizes animals regularly. Those most at risk include pregnant and nursing mothers; newborn puppies and kittens; and sick, injured, or frightened animals. In addition, animals with a history of aggression toward humans will not be placed in new homes.

You can give your surrendered pet the best chance of finding a permanent home by:

  • Enlisting The Humane Society of Culpeper's help in showcasing the companion animal on the Society's Petfinder.com's page.  We don't charge a fee for this service, but nice picture(s) and description / information is necessary.

  • Consulting with the shelter regarding available space before dropping off your pet;
  • Making sure vaccinations are up-to-date and providing appropriate records; and

  • Sharing accurate, detailed information about your pet's behavior and needs.
If you would like to seek a home for your pet privately, visit the Humane Society of the United States website for guidelines on finding a responsible home for your pet.
